How to Build an Elegant Large Dog House – DIY Outdoor Dog House Guide (Imperial Units)

Photorealistic image of the finished black and white dog house Model E in a beautiful courtyard. A Husky is resting comfortably inside on a wooden platform deck, surrounded by a brick wall, green grass, and a wooden fence

Building a comfortable outdoor dog house for a large breed can be both practical and rewarding. This DIY project combines a sturdy wood-frame structure with a pitched roof, elevated base, protective exterior finishes, and a covered front pergola for added character and weather protection.

The plans provide detailed dimensions, cutting layouts, framing diagrams, panel layouts, roofing details, and finishing recommendations to help guide you through the construction process.

Project Dimensions

Four-view black and white technical drawing showing the exact general dimensions for a dog house Model E. Includes top, back, front, and right side views with specific measurements like 4'-4" and 3'-6"

Materials Needed

  • 2×2 planed pine lumber
  • 4×4 pressure-treated lumber for the optional elevated base
  • 1/2" plywood for interior and exterior enclosure panels
  • 3/4" APA-rated structural plywood for designated exterior panels
  • Asphalt shingles
  • Roofing underlayment
  • Galvanized wood screws
  • Galvanized roofing nails
  • Construction adhesive or water-resistant PVA glue
  • Exterior wood stain
  • Exterior spar urethane or protective sealer
  • Exterior-grade paint
  • Metal drip edge flashing

The framing specifies nominal 2×2 lumber with an actual size of approximately 1½" × 1½". The optional base uses three 4×4 pressure-treated beams to elevate the structure and help protect it from ground moisture.

Step 1 – Base Skids

Cut and prepare the three PT-1 pressure-treated 4×4 beams according to the dimensions shown in the plans. These members form the elevated base of the dog house.

Step 2 – Floor Framing

Assemble the JF-1 floor joists, JF-2 end members, and BK-1/BK-2 blocking to form the floor frame. Secure all members according to the dimensions shown in the plans.

Step 3 – Floor Panel & Bottom Plate

Install the PL-1 floor panel over the completed floor frame. Then assemble and secure the BP-1, BP-2, and BP-3 bottom plates around the floor perimeter as shown in the plans.
