How to Build a Small Dog House: DIY Plywood Plans (Imperial Units)
This DIY dog house is a compact shelter designed for small dogs, using a series of precisely shaped 1/2" plywood structural panels.
The design combines the side structural panels, rear enclosure, interior floor, front frame panels, and roof panels into a rigid and compact shelter. The panel-based construction simplifies the assembly process while giving the finished dog house its distinctive geometric form.
The plans are designed for construction using standard 4' × 8' plywood sheets, with a dedicated cutting layout provided to help optimize material usage and minimize waste.
Project Dimensions
Materials Required
- 1/2" Plywood, 4' × 8'
- 2 sheets #8 × 1-1/2" Wood Screws
- 1 box Exterior-Grade / Waterproof Wood Glue
- 1 bottle Sandpaper
- 120 / 180 / 220 grit Brushes
- 2 Dark Wood Stain
- 1 quart Clear Protective Sealer
- 1 quart Clear Water-Based Sealer
- 1 quart
Tools & Preparation
Before beginning assembly, prepare the required cutting, sanding, drilling, and finishing tools. Verify all dimensions and angles before cutting, and prepare the plywood panels according to the cutting layout provided in the plans.
Panel Components
The dog house is assembled from five main panel types, each serving a specific structural or enclosure function.
PL-1 — Side Structural Panels
Four load-bearing side panels made from 1/2" plywood. These panels provide the primary structural stability of the dog house.PL-2 — Rear Closure Panel
One rear enclosure panel that closes the back of the structure.PL-3 — Interior Floor Panel
One 1/2" plywood floor panel forming the interior base of the dog house.PL-4 — Front Frame Panels
Two front panels defining the entrance opening and front geometry.PL-5 — Roof Panels
Two roof panels forming the top enclosure and following the geometry of the structure.Plywood Cutting Layout
The plans include a dedicated cutting layout for standard 4' × 8' plywood sheets. The layout is intended to optimize material usage and minimize waste while maintaining the required grain direction for structural consistency.
Verify all dimensions and angles before cutting. Panels should be cut before applying any finish.
Important Assembly Notes
- Verify all dimensions and angles before cutting.
- Sand exposed plywood edges before finishing.
- Apply wood glue to panel contact surfaces as specified.
- Pre-drill screw locations where required.
- Countersink screws flush with the plywood surface.
- Do not overtighten screws to avoid plywood delamination.
- Follow the individual panel drawings for specific connections and fastening requirements.
Recommended Finish
The plans recommend a dark wood exterior finish combined with a clear protective sealer, while the interior can be finished with a satin clear water-based sealer for moisture protection and easier cleaning.
Exterior:
- Dark Walnut / Espresso wood stain
- Clear water-based polyurethane
- Satin or matte sheen
- 2–3 coats
Interior:
- Clear water-based sealer
- Satin sheen
- 2–3 coats
