How to Build a Double Dog House for Large Dogs: Step-by-Step Guide (Imperial Units)

Completed Model I black and white duplex two-dog house with a German Shepherd resting in the left compartment and a Golden Retriever standing in the right compartment, surrounded by a garden with plants and a gravel path

Looking for a practical outdoor shelter for two large dogs? This double dog house is designed to provide two separate, comfortable spaces while offering a sturdy and weather-resistant structure.

In this step-by-step guide, you’ll learn how to build the dog house from the ground up, including the base, floor framing, walls, roof structure, exterior panels, and finishing details. The plans are designed to make the construction process easier to follow, with detailed drawings and dimensions for each stage.

Project Dimensions

Four-view architectural blueprint showing the top, back, front, and right side dimensions of a two-dog house, detailing the roof, walls, and overall structure measurements

Materials Needed

Structural Materials

  • 2×4 planed pine lumber
  • 2×2 planed pine lumber
  • 4×4 pressure-treated lumber for the optional base
  • 3/4" APA-rated structural plywood
  • 5/8" exterior-grade or marine plywood
  • 1/2" exterior-grade plywood for wall panels

The plans specify 2×4 lumber for the wall framing and 2×2 lumber for roof and porch framing.

Framing & Hardware

  • #8 galvanized wood screws, 3"
  • 8d galvanized nails or exterior-grade screws
  • 2"–2-1/2" ring-shank nails or wood screws
  • Construction adhesive or water-resistant PVA glue
  • Exterior-grade sealant or silicone

Exterior & Roofing Materials

  • Asphalt shingles, architectural or 3-tab type
  • Approved roof underlayment
  • Exterior-grade or marine plywood
  • Exterior wood sealer

The roof sheathing is specified as 5/8" exterior-grade or marine plywood, with corrosion-resistant fasteners for exterior applications.

Finishes

  • Exterior-grade white paint
  • Exterior-grade matte black paint
  • Exterior semi-transparent wood stain
  • Exterior polyurethane, spar urethane, or marine varnish

The plans specify white wood finishes, natural wood finishes with exterior protective coatings, and matte black exterior paint for designated components.

Optional Insulation

  • Fiberglass batt insulation
  • Mineral wool insulation
  • Rigid foam insulation

Insulation can be installed between the 2×4 wall studs to improve thermal performance and comfort.

Shopping List

Tip: For exact quantities, cut dimensions, and purchase units, always refer to the Bill of Materials and individual construction sheets included with the complete plans. The material takeoff quantities are estimates and already account for cutting/waste allowances where specified.

STEP 1 – Prepare the Base Supports

Cut the PT-1 pressure-treated lumber pieces to the specified lengths. These members will serve as the primary supports for the dog house base and should be prepared before assembling the floor frame.

STEP 2 – Assemble the Floor Frame

Assemble the floor frame using the JF-1 and JF-2 members. Install the BK-1 and BK-2 blocking pieces between the joists, keeping the frame square and properly aligned.

STEP 3 – Install the Floor and Bottom Plates

Install the floor panel over the completed floor frame, then secure the BP-1, BP-2, and BP-3 bottom plate components in their specified positions. Check the layout and alignment before continuing with the wall framing.

STEP 4 – Build the Wall Framing

Assemble the wall framing using the ST-1 studs, TP-1 and TP-2 top plates, and BR-1 bracing members. Secure each framed section in position, maintaining proper alignment and spacing.

STEP 5 – Install the Interior Panels

Install the PL-1, PL-2, and PL-3 panels over the completed wall framing. Secure the panels in place, ensuring the edges align properly with the framing and the openings remain unobstructed.

STEP 6 – Assemble the Roof Framing

Install the JR-1 rafters along the roof structure, then add the BM-1, BM-2, and BM-3 framing members and BK-3 blocking. Secure each component according to the plan, keeping the roof framing properly aligned.

STEP 7 – Exterior Wall Panels & Thermal Insulation

Once the roof framing is complete, install the exterior wall panels over the framed walls. The panels provide the structural and protective exterior layer, while leaving the roof openings and entry areas properly defined. For climates where additional temperature control is desired, thermal insulation can be installed inside the wall cavities before closing the interior walls.

STEP 8 — Optional Entrance Framing

Install the optional framing around the entrances to provide a finished, reinforced opening. Follow the plan dimensions and secure the frame members to the existing wall framing.

Step 8 3D diagram showing the installation of the entrance frame with labeled parts TR-1 and TR-2 on the structure of a Model I two-dog house

STEP 9 — Porch Framing

Install the porch framing around the entrance areas, securing the vertical and horizontal members to the existing structure. Follow the plan dimensions and framing details for proper alignment and support.

Step 9 3D diagram showing the porch framing structure with labeled parts JR-2, JR-3, JR-4, and ST-4 for building a Model I two-dog house

STEP 10 — Roof & Porch Panels

Install the panels over the main roof and porch framing, securing them to the roof structure. Align the panels carefully at the roof edges and transitions to provide a continuous, properly supported surface.

Step 10 3D diagram showing the installation of roof and porch panels labeled PL-7, PL-8, and PL-9 on the multi-sloped structure of a Model I two-dog house

STEP 11 — Asphalt Shingles & Ridge Cap

Install the asphalt shingles over the roof panels, working from the lower roof edges upward. Finish by installing the ridge cap along the roof peaks, ensuring all shingles are properly aligned and secured.

STEP 12 — Finishes

Apply the selected exterior finishes to protect the structure and complete the dog house. Use white wood finish for the walls, a natural wood finish with exterior polyurethane, spar urethane, or marine varnish for the porch areas, and exterior-grade matte black paint for the base and framing accents.
