Shopping List
These finishes follow the project's architectural finish schedule: white exterior panels, dark walnut structural wood, natural wood walking surfaces, and black corrosion-resistant hardware.
Tip: For exact quantities, cut dimensions, and purchase units, always refer to the Bill of Materials and individual construction sheets included with the complete plans. The material takeoff quantities are estimates and already account for cutting/waste allowances where specified.
STEP 1 — Base Skid Assembly
Begin by preparing the three PT-1 pressure-treated 4×4 beams that form the optional raised base for the dog house. These members provide a stable support platform for the floor framing and help keep the structure elevated when installed outdoors or in areas exposed to moisture.
STEP 2 — Assemble the Floor Frame
Begin by assembling the main floor frame using the PT-1 pressure-treated supports, JF-1 floor framing members, and the intermediate BK-1 and BK-2 blocking. Position each component according to the dimensions and spacing shown in the plans, ensuring the frame remains square and properly aligned.
Secure all connections firmly and verify that the floor structure is level before proceeding to the next step.
STEP 3 — Floor And Bottom Plates
Install the floor panel (PL-0) over the completed floor framing, making sure it is properly aligned and securely fastened. Then install the bottom plates (BP-1, BP-2, BP-3, and BP-4) according to the plan layout. These plates establish the base of the wall framing and should be positioned accurately to ensure proper alignment of the walls in the following steps.
STEP 4 — Wall Framing
Assemble and install the wall framing using the ST-1 studs and TP-1 / TP-2 top plates. Position the studs according to the plan layout, including the framed openings and interior partitions, then secure the top plates to complete the wall assemblies. Verify that all walls are properly aligned, plumb, and securely connected to the bottom plates before proceeding to the next step.
STEP 5 — Interior Panels
Install the interior panels (PL-2, PL-3, and PL-4) over the completed wall framing. Position each panel according to the plan layout, ensuring that the panels are properly aligned with the wall framing and openings. Secure them to the framing to create the interior wall surfaces and complete the separation between the dog areas.
STEP 7 — Floor And Bottom Plates
Install the floor panel (PL-1) over the completed intermediate floor framing. Once the panel is properly positioned and secured, install the bottom plates (BP-1, BP-2, BP-3, and BP-4) according to the plan layout. Ensure all plates are accurately aligned and firmly fastened to provide a solid base for the next level of wall framing.
STEP 8 — Wall Framing
Install the upper-level wall framing using the ST-1 and ST-2 studs, together with the TP-1 and TP-2 top plates and BM-1 members. Position the studs according to the plan layout, including the wall openings and interior partitions, then secure the top plates and framing members. Check that all walls are properly aligned, plumb, and securely fastened before continuing to the next stage.
STEP 9 – Interior Wall Panels
With the wall framing in place, install the interior wall panels according to the plan layout. Position the panels over the framed walls, keeping the required openings and transitions properly aligned.
Secure each panel to the wall framing and verify that the edges meet cleanly at corners and intersections. The panels identified as PL-2, PL-3, and PL-4 complete the interior enclosure of the upper structure.
STEP 10 – Roof Framing
With the upper wall structure completed, begin assembling the roof framing. Install the JR-1 rafters along the roof slopes, positioning them according to the spacing and layout shown in the plans.
Add the BM-2 framing member at the upper roof area and install the ST-3 components at the gable ends to properly support and connect the roof structure.
STEP 11 – Exterior Wall Panels
With the roof framing in place, install the exterior wall panels around the structure. Position each panel according to the plan layout, covering the exterior wall framing while maintaining the required openings and transitions.
The exterior panels shown in this step include PL-5, PL-6, PL-7, PL-8, PL-9, and PL-10.
STEP 12 – Entrance Frames
Install the entrance frames at the designated openings on both levels of the dog house. These framing elements define and reinforce the entry areas while providing a finished transition between the interior spaces and the exterior.
The components shown in this step are TB-1 and TB-2.
STEP 13 – Canopies and Braces
Install the exterior canopies and their supporting braces around the upper level of the dog house. These elements provide additional protection over the openings while adding structural support to the canopy projections.
The components shown in this step include CB-1, CB-2, CB-3, and BR-2.
STEP 14 – Roof Panels
Install the roof panels over the completed roof framing. Position the panels along both roof slopes, ensuring they are properly aligned with the rafters and roof edges.
STEP 15 – Asphalt Shingles and Ridge Cap
With the roof panels installed, proceed with the roofing system by installing the asphalt shingles over both roof slopes. Begin at the lower edges and work upward, following the recommended shingle installation pattern.
Finish the roof at the ridge by installing the ridge cap, providing a continuous and weather-resistant transition between both roof slopes.
STEP 16 — Ramp Framing
Install the structural framing for the access ramp, including the ramp joists, support members, and connection hardware. Ensure the ramp framing is securely anchored to the dog house structure and properly supported at the lower end.
STEP 17 — Ramp Panels & Anti-Slip Cleats
Install the ramp panels over the completed ramp framing, securing the panels to the underlying supports. Then install the anti-slip cleats evenly along the ramp surface to provide traction and help prevent the dogs from slipping while using the ramp.
STEP 18 — Guardrails
Install the guardrails around the elevated platform and access area. Secure the vertical posts and horizontal rails to the structural framing, ensuring all connections are firmly fastened and the guardrails provide continuous protection along the exposed edges.
