How to Build a Modern Dog House – Black & Natural Wood DIY Plans (Metric Units)
Looking for a modern outdoor shelter for your dog? This DIY dog house combines a clean architectural design with a striking black and natural wood finish, creating a stylish and practical space for outdoor use.
In this step-by-step guide, you’ll learn how to build the structure from the floor framing and wall assembly to the sloped roof, exterior sheathing, roofing membrane, and finishing details. The design also features an elevated base that can be used to improve ventilation beneath the floor and reduce prolonged ground contact.
The complete construction plans include detailed drawings, dimensions, framing details, and material specifications to help you follow each stage with greater accuracy. The plans are prepared in metric units and correspond to Dog House Model K, 1.935 × 1.245 m.

Step 1 – Build the Optional Base
Assemble the three 90 × 90 mm pressure-treated timber beams to create the optional elevated base. Place them on level ground or suitable supports, keeping them properly aligned and stable before installing the floor framing.
Step 2 – Build the Floor Frame
Assemble the 45 × 90 mm timber members to form the floor frame. Install the joists at 400 mm on center, using joist hangers where indicated, and secure all connections with exterior-grade galvanized fasteners.
Step 3 – Install the Floor Sheathing and Bottom Plates
Install the floor sheathing over the completed floor frame, then secure the 45 × 90 mm bottom plates according to the layout shown in the plans. Leave a small expansion gap between adjacent panels and ensure all panel edges are fully supported by the framing.
Step 4 – Build the Wall Frames
Assemble the wall frames using 45 × 90 mm timber, following the stud and opening layout shown in the plans. Secure the studs to the bottom plates and add the required top plates and brace to create a rigid, properly aligned structure.
Step 5 – Install the Interior Wall Panels
Install the 12 mm exterior-grade or marine-grade plywood panels on the interior faces of the wall framing. Follow the panel layout, keeping the edges supported and leaving a small expansion gap between adjacent panels.
Step 6 – Build the Roof Frame
Assemble the roof framing using 45 × 90 mm and 45 × 45 mm timber members, following the supports, beams, blocking, and joist layout shown in the plans. Maintain the specified roof slope and securely fasten each connection before installing the roof sheathing.
Step 7 – Install the Exterior Wall Sheathing
Install the 12 mm exterior-grade or marine-grade plywood panels over the wall framing, following the panel layout shown in the plans. Keep the panels aligned, provide the required expansion gaps, and ensure all edges are fully supported before fastening.
Step 8 – Install the Roof Sheathing
Install the 15 mm exterior-grade or marine-grade plywood over the roof framing, following the panel layout shown in the plans. Keep the panels properly aligned, leave the required expansion gaps, and ensure all edges are fully supported before fastening.
Step 11 – Apply the Exterior Finishes
Finish the exterior plywood surfaces with exterior-grade black paint, while treating the exposed natural wood areas with exterior polyurethane, spar urethane, or marine-grade varnish. Complete the finish according to the areas indicated in the plans and allow all coatings to fully cure before outdoor exposure.
