How to Use Annotative Objects Correctly in AutoCAD

Working with different drawing scales can become frustrating when text, dimensions, and annotations do not display correctly.

Annotative objects are designed to help solve this problem.

Instead of creating different versions of the same text or dimension for every scale, you can configure an object to automatically maintain an appropriate plotted size.

Use Annotative Text

Annotative text can maintain a consistent printed height regardless of the viewport scale.

For example, if your standard printed text height is 3/32", AutoCAD can automatically adjust the text size in Model Space depending on the viewport scale.

This is particularly useful when the same drawing contains multiple scales.

Use Annotative Dimensions

Dimensions can also be configured as annotative objects.

This allows you to maintain consistent dimension graphics when working with different viewport scales.

Use Annotative Multileaders

Multileaders can also benefit from annotative settings, particularly when creating detailed construction drawings.

Notes, callouts, and other annotations can maintain consistent plotted proportions without requiring multiple copies.

Avoid duplicating annotations unnecessarily

Without a good annotation strategy, users often create separate copies of text and dimensions for different scales.

This can create problems during revisions because changing one version does not automatically update the others.

A properly configured annotative workflow can significantly reduce this type of duplication.

Be consistent

Annotative objects are powerful, but they work best when your annotation styles are configured correctly from the beginning.

Your template should ideally contain your preferred:

  • Annotative text styles
  • Dimension styles
  • Multileader styles
  • Annotation scales

This makes the entire system much easier to manage.
